U.S. STATES AND CITIES: 1853

Larger Maps                         Products and Services

Originally issued in 1853 by H. Phelps & Co. for inclusion in Fanning's Illustrated Gazetteer of the United States, these state and city maps were the first octavo size maps designed specifically for a U. S. gazetteer. Each state map shows county names and boundaries, many towns and prominent geographic features. City maps show most streets and, where indicated, the important ward boundaries.

Ideal for the instructor and field researcher alike, these maps were originally designed to show the county divisions of each state at the time of the 1850 Census, a critical time for the genealogist.

We've slightly enlarged and reproduced the maps in this series on heavyweight 8.5" X 11" linen-finish paper with ample right and left hand margins so that they may be punched for a binder, if desired.

The cost of maps in this series is $1.50  each plus shipping.  All maps in this series are shipped unfolded, by first class mail.  To order any maps on this page go here.

ENGLAND AND WALES:

COUNTY MAPS - : 1835; 1840-1845

Maps in this series are each 8.5" x 11", printed on heavy-weight linen-finish paper.

Those maps with the (HUNDREDS) or (WARDS) designation following the county name were drawn by R. Creighton and engraved by J. and C. Walker. Drawn primarily to illustrate the changes of the Parliamentary Reform Act of 1835, these maps show the division of each county into "hundreds", the ancient minor civil subdivision not usually shown on larger maps. Note that the maps of Durham, Northumberland and Westmorland are divided into wards, rather than hundreds. Major roads and turnpikes, as well as borough towns, polling places, and the largest settlements are also shown.

All other maps in the series were drawn and engraved by J. Archer and issued in London between 1840 and 1845. Towns, villages, and hamlets are identified and, in some instances, even the family seats of the nobility and landed gentry. Each map also shows topographical features, as well as canals, roads and internal political boundaries. The important railway lines and stations are also located.

The cost of maps in this series is $1.50  each plus shipping. All maps in this series are shipped unfolded, by first class mail. To order any maps on this page go here.

IRISH COUNTY MAPS: 1895

Originally issued by P.W. Joyce in 1895, each county map in this series identifies towns, villages, railway lines and canals. In addition, the map shows the baronies in each county - and even the location of a number of large estates and "great houses"! Because these are exact reprints of antique originals, slight imperfections affecting the typefaces are occasionally visible, just as they appear in the original lithographs.

Each of our reprints is printed on heavyweight 8 ½" x 11" linen-finish paper, similar to the maps in our popular English County series.

The cost of maps in this series is $1.50  each plus shipping. All maps in this series are shipped unfolded, by first class mail.  To order any maps on this page go here.
