FRANCE

[X 3] France (4 maps). Originally published in 1830-31, our reprint of J.& C. Walker's 3-map set of France is a fine example of old "scientific" map-making. A multitude of villages, roads and geographic features are shown as they were in the early 1800s. A smaller 1805 map of France which clearly delineates internal boundaries has been included.

SWITZERLAND AND ITALY

[M 16] Switzerland Circa 1875. Cantons and Alpine towns are clearly identified, as are the rail and carriage roads. Mountain paths and some villages are shown.

[M 27] Switzerland: 1794. This very detailed 1794 Laurie and Whittle map entitled A New Map of Switzerland, ... shows towns, large villages, castles, vineyards, Protestant & Catholic parishes, cart roads and footpaths. An inset shows the religious affiliation of each canton, and the political affiliations.

[X 8] Italy Circa 1875 (2 sheets). Shows the Kingdom of Italy after the unification of 1860. Excellent detail for this area, locating many small villages. There are inset maps of Sardinia and Malta. The former names of provinces are also given.

[M 36] Northwest Italy: 1799. Entitled A New Map of Piedmont, the Duchies of Savoy and Milan, and the Republic of Genoa, with Their Subdivisions from the Latest Authorities, this 1799 map by John Cary shows the area east from Geneva in the north and Nice and Monaco in the south to the Duchies of Parma, Massa and Tuscany and the western border of the Republic of Venice. Towns, villages, roads and internal subdivisions are shown as they appeared at the end of the 18th century.

[R 27] Southern Italy: 1842. A.K. Johnston’s map, entitled Italy: South Part, was first issued in 1842. The map focuses on Italy south of Rome, and shows the Mezzogiorno area divided into provinces. Villages and towns, railway lines and roads are shown, as are the regional subdivisions in Sicily. An attractive large inset view of Sardinia makes this map a useful research tool.

[R 21] Calabria: A nicely detailed 1890 map of Calabria, showing the region south of the Gulfs of Taranto and Policastro. Useful for locating small villages. 11" X 17".
