Unless otherwise indicated, all books in this list are in sound, usable condition ("very good"), in the original cloth binding and are 8vo. (approximately 6" X 9" in size.) Most are not new; however, previous owners' names, bookplates, stamps and other marks of ownership are not noted unless such markings are disfiguring. Bindings on older books will usually show normal signs of wear and use relative to the age of the book. Excessive wear or damage is noted in the description. Books whose condition is above average are also noted.

805037M Dictionary of Trade Name Origins, by Adrian Room, Published by Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1983. Revised edition. Biblio., illus., black cloth, dj., 8vo., 217 pp. VG condition. This is the kind of book that all serious researchers like to have handy on the shelf.  It tells the stories behind the origins of more than 700 common trade (brand) names, many of which are internationally famous.  For example, how many people know that the trade name Fanta, which is owned by Coca-Cola, was first used in Germany during World War II.  The name was derived from the word “fantasia”.  The book is British, as are many of the names, but it will still be a useful find for the North American researcher …or reader of English mystery novels. $27.50

The author explains the methods of study of place-names and discusses the meaning and topographical distribution of many family and personal names found in place-names.  Place-names with a Celtic, Scandinavian and Norman derivation as well as those derived from ancient tribes, topography and religion are explored. “Quite the best general book on English place-names.” $22.50
